Young Guns Defendant Sentenced to Prison for Deadly Drive-by Shooting of St. Augustine Mother

ST. AUGUSTINE – During a hearing this morning, defendant Evins Harris pled to Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm and Attempted Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm. He was then sentenced to 30 years in Florida State Prison.

On June 16, 2021, Harris, who was only 20 years old at the time, shot into the victim’s vehicle multiple times as she was leaving a West Augustine convenience store with her boyfriend. The victim was shot in the back and crashed her vehicle. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.

The victim’s boyfriend told St. Johns County Detectives that someone had come to the couple’s house earlier that day and warned him to “watch his back, Evins was going to get him.” GPS location data from Harris’ phone also put him at the scene at the time of the shooting.

The case was investigated by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant State Attorney Mark Johnson successfully prosecuted the case for the state. The Honorable Lee Smith presided over the case and pronounced sentence.
