Sandra Heilman Convicted of DUI Causing Death in 19 Minutes

DAYTONA BEACH – A Volusia County Jury comprised of 4 women and 2 men took only nineteen minutes to convict a Daytona Beach woman of DUI Causing Death today, October 1, 2015. Sandra Dee Heilman, 44, faces 15 years in prison following the conviction at a sentencing date to be set.

 

            On November 10, 2012, Sandra Dee Heilman was operating a 2007 Ford Fusion that rear-ended 22-year-old Laura Hrobsky, who was stopped at a red light. Hrobsky was pronounced dead at the scene. Heilman’s blood-alcohol level was .152, almost two times the legal limit. Evidence at trial showed that Heilman was traveling 61 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone when she rear-ended Ms. Hrobsky. Heilman also tested positive for THC.

 

            Assistant State Attorneys Laura Coln and Michael Willard, both of the State Attorney’s Career Criminal Unit, prosecuted the case. Seventh Circuit Judge Frank Marriott presided over the case and will pronounce sentence at a hearing date to be set.
